Doctrine: Rubbing The Rust Off Religious Words

In Doctrine, Epistemology, Theology on February 1, 2010 at 7:49 am

The devil loves nothing more than to turn daily words, words which we’re meant to confess sins and kiss our children by, into dirty words. For he knows that if he can muddy up words like justification or righteousness, they are useless to Christians. His aim then, is to get us feeling that the most necessary words in scripture are lousy or lofty; snobbish or foolish; and so on.

Such is the case with the word doctrine.

Doctrine is a daily word that has become a dirty word in the mind of many Christians. It’s a sad day when the church no longer cares for doctrine. Without doctrine words become dull and useless weapons. That’s why, in every age, God has raised up everyday theologians; men and women who rub the rust off the religious words we most need to follow Jesus faithfully. It’s my hope that this site will be a place where everyday theologians can be inspired and equipped to do just that. Each week, I will do my best to rub the rust off a theological term or two while pointing to authors along the way that are far better at doing this than myself.

For the gospel,
Christopher
